Hi Jeff
Well I guess everyone is waiting for number 49!! LOL
In my opinion, people miss opportunities due to fear.
Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of rejection, fear of ridicule by peers and family. That is enough to freeze anyone in their tracks.
You can’t get a different end result if you do not change the course you are taking.
So why did you not speak to the young man on the plane? Fear of rejection?
Food for thought : )
Have a good one Jeff!

Jeff-
I think the reason people miss out on opportunities is that they haven’t developed their enthusiasm for life and for the opportunities and people that they come across. They have forgotten that they have the opportunity to not only be enriched by others, but an obligation to enrich the lives of others. They miss out on great opportunities because they forget that they also have something to share and can be an opportunity for others. How cool is it when YOU can be Someone else’s opportunity! So get over your “cool,” get enthusuastic about others and capitalize on those opportunities you might otherwise miss.
Jeff-Keep up the great work!

Hi Jeff,
I think one of the main reasons that people miss opportunities is that they fail to simply talk to one another. We have become a society of mind my own business, and not care about other people.
I’ve been in the same situation that you described and saw the person at the same conference I was attending. (still wouldn’t talk to me by the way) I have also found that no matter what you do, some people don’t want to talk. Maybe they don’t know what to say or they are afraid they’ll be asked too many questions.
I like to try to get a discussion going by just simply asking if the person lives in the city I’m flying to, etc. I am by nature a private person so I’m really working hard at striking up conversations with anyone and everyone - it really forces me to push myself out of my comfort zone.
Like Deb, I’m curious why you didn’t talk to the man on the plane? I look forward to hearing your answer.

Jeff,
I believe opportunities are missed for several reasons.
Some opportunities are passed up because there is work involved. In the case of speaking to a stranger, fear is not always a factor. Sometimes you just want to enjoy a nice, quiet ride. So, you pass up a chance to speak to someone new.
Fear can be a major cause of many missed opportunities. Like Deb said, it can be a fear of failure, success, or any number of things. But I once heard fear described as “false evidence appearing real.” If fear is the reason you’re passing up opportunities, it might help to frame it in that context. I’ve learned to feel fear but take action anyway. It’s uncomfortable at first, but it gets easier each time.
Along the same lines, opportunities can be missed because there’s a financial risk involved. Prehaps you must make an investment in order to benefit from an opportunity. That could actually be a form of fear, but it could also just be due to being overly conservative. There are times when you simply must take a risk. Yes, it should be a calculated risk, but there will be times when you must take a leap of faith. The outcome will take care of itself, and you will always learn something in the process.
Don’t buy into the idea that great opportunities don’t come along every day because they quite often do. And if you find that you’ve missed a great opportunity, you will probably see the next opportunity that much more clearly.
September 18th, 2007 at 1:16 am
Ok I guess I will have to help you out.
Will someone win the prize?
Well for this to be a real post to count I have to give an answer to the question. My answer has to be the Failure to take action.
Deb and Regina your curiosity also deserves an answer.
The reason we did not talk to each other was for this reason.
First we thought what are the chances that each of us were going to the same place. San Fransisco is a big place and out of all of the poeple on the plane what were the chances of each of us ending up in the same place.
2nd was because when you tell someone what you do for a living you are looked at very strangly.
and they want to know what kind of scam you are pulling. So it is easier to not say anything.
3rd we just plain messed up and did not share what we were ment to share.
But I am now taking the action to capitalize on the mistake I made and the new opportunity that has developed from the missed opportunity.
Hope that answers your question.

Hi Jeff et al….
I would like to think that everything that takes place , happens for the best.
But I know that sometimes the above statement isn’t true.
I have also been in situations where my failure to act cost me.
For example, how many times have you received an idea only to put it off.
A few months or years later you walk into a store or are watching TV when you see someone has created or produced your exact idea!
“What…..but that was my idea, I thought of it first,” you think to yourself.
This is the price of in-action. And its too late.
Or is it?
Maybe its not too late. Maybe each moment is another chance to turn it all around.
I think Jeff left us a clue at the end of his comment above.
Jeff is now taking action to rectify his mistake and make it right again.
Mary Pickford once said, ” Failure isnt falling down, but staying down.”
Another quote I got from a friend which illustrates my point: ” I feared failure, Until I realized that I only Fail when I dont TRY”
So even if we miss an oppurtunity, its not too late to correct and take appropriate action.
Your friend,
Koorosh

I think I didnt answer what Jeff was actually asking.
So why do people miss out on opportunities by not taking action???
There are plenty of answers.
-Procrastination
-Making false judgements about people (thinking the other person is arrogant and doesnt want to talk, or maybe that the person wont stop talking if you open a conversation etc)
-Fear of rejection
-Many people were taught when they were children not to talk to strangers. Maybe that belief is still there.
-Many people put others on a pedestal and think they have nothing interesting to say.
-Others look down on people, seeing them as inferior and having nothing beneficial to offer.
-Many people will wait for other people to ”open” the conversation.
And the list goes on.
YOur friend,
Koorosh

As an outsider…pressing my curious nose against the thick and impenetrable glass wall called the Internet I am slowly being convinced that yes, in deed there are folks who make a full-time living from web activities…to you I say Amen and well done! Having said that, I also have never found anyone who was willing or capable of explaining to me how I too can earn income from the web, for me the experience has been frustrating to say the least! It is like a big puzzle that always lacks the final piece….most programs lead you to the water, but don`t tell you how to get a drink….this I guess is that big SECRET that noone is willing to share.
Just my opinion.

Hi Jeff,
I think the number one reasons people miss out on
opportunities is because fear of failue so they don’t take action.

September 18th, 2007 at 5:29 am
The Number 1 reason why 99% of all people fail is PROCRASTINATION .
We all live in our individual comfort zone and it is incredible hard to get out of it.That is because our brain is “programmed” in a certain way through education and experience. Everything new is bad and dangerous.
My opinion
September 18th, 2007 at 8:25 am
Why do we miss Opportunities?
Many reasons … some intentional (conscious) and many subconscious.
In many cases, we simply don’t notice them or don’t realize their importance. It’s only when we learn more about ourselves, what we want to achieve, get a clear picture of our target, our destination can we even begin to see what may have an effect on the journey we need to take to get there.
We also have fears about change …. about moving out of our comfort zone and too readily walk the path well trod. Achieving a new result requires change … both seeing and doing things differently and doing different things.
We associate more pain to the change than we currently experience and not enough gain (pleasure) to making it. this can (of course) be changed by altering the asociations we have and rewarding ourselves for achieving the small milestones en route.
But the primary reason is awareness. We make assumptions that affect our decisions that affect our actions (and non-actions). And it’s all too easy to assume that a young person will neither be very interesting or interested, so leave them be! So we should NOT make assumptions but be curious. Question everything. You never know what it may reveal!

September 18th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
Hi Jeff,
It is nice of you to reflect on yourself at some point of time in your life.
It is being advocated by our Scholors(India) that one has to reflect on
oneself as often as possible to realise oneself before the destination comes
in one’s life. And it is still greater you do the introspection with others.
Let us now analyse the case in question. As I see it, both of you are of
some stature in your own right in the field of online marketing, though you
don’t know anything about the other person who is a stranger. Here the
psychological factor of mental block/ inhibition plays its part.
But if you ask why people miss out on many of the opportunities in their
lives thare are many factors for it. Here again according to me the first
and foremost reason is fear of failure which is the greatest killer. The
second reason being the risk involved when trying out something different
financially. I would with some certainty say that there are dupers and
cheaters out there to rob you off your money in the guise of offering
something. Life’s journey is nothing but enjoying it with others and it does
happen when you know who you are.
To sum it up, in the words of Ford “If you think you can or you think you
can’t you are right.

HMMMMMM 14 posts out of 10,000 emails that went out.
Now If i had sent an email out telling everyone that they were going to win this camera and my hidden opportunity. Do you think that I would have had 50 posts yet?
I am sure I would have, especially if everyone knew what the hidden opportunity was.
Well the clock is ticking away we have 20 hours left from the time I wrote this email before this Opportunity becomes “THE MISSED OPPORTUNITY!”
What about you that have posted already will you miss out also?
Jason DeVelvis and I are taking advantage of our missed opportunity and making new opportunities happen.

As I write this , there are only 16 comments before me.
This means that that mine is the 17th comment.
Wow!
Jeff has 10,000+ people on his list and 17 comments.
Thats not good. Maybe people dont care about the camera. Maybe they already have one.
Maybe if Jeff offered a Ferrari, there would be more people commenting
:-).
To be fair, Not everyone reads Jeff’s blog daily. Many people do it on a weekly basis due to time constraints.
Maybe this is a sign that I have too much time on my hands.

What is up with this guy Koorosh? HMMMMM!
Un-fortunatly he has found the wrong time converter becaue there is still
1 hour and 45 minutes before the deadline.
It is looking like we will have one more missed opportunity at that time.
What if it is something so small and insignificant that everyone feels cheated out of in the end?
But what if it is the one opportunity that really could make the difference that changes your life forever?
Maybe that is it in a nutshell?
Maybe not knowing what the hidden opportunity is, causes fear that we actually will have to make some changes in our life and we are afraid that if we find the success we crave that it can be taken away.
I really think some may be worried that they will succeed and are worried about what it will bring.
I know i was really tired of feeling the pains of failure, but I wasn’t really sure I could handle everything associated with success. After all I was going to have to start giving back. What did I have to offer that was of value to someone else?
Well I took some very big steps into the un-known and what I found the greatest gift I had to offer was ME!
We all bring something new and unique to the table. What you have to offer is completely different than what the next person has to offer. But you first have to bring it to the table.
This all started by a simple quiet plane ride that i seen as a missed opportunity. I decided to make a new opportunity for myself and others.
Jason is now doing something he has been putting off for some time now. I have come to the conclusion that we did not miss an opportunity after all.
Well now I see the clock is down to 1 hour and 15 minutes remaining.
I will check back and see the final results then.
Jeff
September 19th, 2007 at 4:27 pm
Well I am back and the deadline is now past. And I am afraid the results are what I thought they would be.
Actually they are better than I expected.
So what does Jeff Wellman feel is the number one reason why we miss opportunity?
We fail to take action. The reason we fail to do this is because of all of the reasons you all just wrote about above.
So what was the hidden opportunity that you missed out on?
I sure wan’t the silly camera I offered. Most of you all probably have one or could get one if you really wanted one that bad.
Koorosh you were right there man you were looking for it. You were doing everything you could to figure it out and to take advantage of the opportunity even though you were not sure what it was and how benificial it may be to you. You and I need to talk my friend.
Well I guess I better send out an email to everyone and let them know just what went on here and tell about the hidden opportunity.
Jeff
September 19th, 2007 at 6:37 pm
Hi Jeff - lots of the guys above have just about said it all but sometimes you just have so much going on that you dont see the wood for the trees - but hey - some people never speak on planes - I get on ay least 4 a month and I always attempt a conversation if someone sits next to me - dont always work though - usually not a common language or culture - may be thats half of it - peoples idea of their place in life - well as long as your breathing……..
September 19th, 2007 at 8:00 pm
hey Jeff Excellent Question,
The number one reason people miss opportunity -Is we do not see it for what it is even if it is just talking to someone. If we Truly see the scenario or what is possible, there will be action and no fear. Obstacles or lack of skill will not matter.

Hiya Jeff
This question has been bounced about since adam was a lad haha
it Is a bit like the chicken and the egg question realy in that it depends on who you ask and at what time in their life you ask it.
Is it that people dont take chances (no there is still mlm hahah)
Taking action?
people take action every second of every day in some form of another
so it cant be that.
Is it they are afraid of hard work? it cant be or society would grind to a halt.
Is it that people dont trust marketers? well lots of coke and cars being sold so no not that.
Is it that a high volume of people have worked hard for years to make a living, then pulled together some cash to take action and after taking action, they have found that the hypnotic or whatever marketing ploy they fell for has yeilded little or no result?(i have been asked this hahah)
well thats a big may be, however if that was the case i wouldnt still be here hu hum years down the line.
I think it is the huge ammounts of email people get(thanks to the mega givaway this n that) that has them constantly fire fighting so to speak to make a decision ( email can be very adictive lets be honest here) hahaha
they say give a person a fishing rod and they will eat for life
Well email is a big granade providing so many fishes it takes more time to colect the fish than eat it hahahah
Cost?
a pneny can be the equivilent of a million to different people so cost is relative to the individual as nothing has any value if you have no cash to spend irrespective of who wrote or is selling it and how wonderful they may be.
So there you have it may ramble I am of to go fishing again at the outlook express pool hahahah
take care

Hey Jeff,
I was all tied up and missed the excitement here. Wow, the answers above are supurb! This is developing into a great crowd of quality people. I’m happy to be a part of what is happening here.
Why do people miss out on things? I have another idea. Did you hear the fox and the hedgehog explanation a few months back? Some people continually chase after the new and the shiny, and no time ends up getting dedicated to growing skill and expertise. Foxes cover a lot of ground, but get distracted.
The hedgehog is kinda like the tortoise in that other hare-and-tortoise story. She’s got a target in mind, and has chosen a way to get there. She gets GOOD - Real Good - at some particular thing. She builds on a strength and keeps improving it. She’s very happy to ignore other things; focus is part of the strength she builds on.
Here’s to all of us developing our inner hedgehogs.
Cheers,
Tim

Hi, Jeff
Just read all the comments here and people do have a great amount of possibilities of why people miss out. I have enjoyed reading their responses to the question that you ask and also pleased that they took time out of their busy lives to respond.
I know from my own experience that i have missed out on opportunities on many occasions because, when i meet a stranger at a party, in the local pub, out shopping and many other places that the situation occurs is in, i am more inclined to not speak and so not get to know them. Even when i could have just said hi to them and gone on my way, i felt slightly embarrassed at starting a conversation. Some of these people may have opened up a door to something that i could have used to improve my life, but obviously by not getting to know them by breaking the ice i will never know.
I have however got to know people at a later date and found that they have just recently started a new venture that would have benefited me personally but because i did not speak when i first saw them, that opportunity just passed me by.
We can all have regrets when opportunity passes us by, but if we learn from that experience, then we are better equipped for future discovery.
So in a nutshell the reason people miss out is because they do not speak to each other and discover what lies ahead…
Hope this makes sense…

Well Jeff
There is alot of reasons for missed opportunities but I do agree with Koorosh about things happening for a reason and of course procrastination.
I had to go to my mother’s up in the white mountains and she doesn’t have a computer. Heck she doesn’t even have cable to watch TV - she watches two very fuzzy channels but she is happy with it. I left Sunday and just got back today so I am catching up on all the emails today… Have a great day and smile at someone so they can have a great day too. God Bless Cheryl
